View Full Version : Ask the Champ Man developers your questions

Hi folks,
Have you got something you'd like to ask the developers of Championship Manager?
Roy Meredith (BGS and CM General Manager) is appearing on Gamespot's podcast this Thursday and we'd like to invite you to post your questions to him here. We can't promise they'll all be answered, but if you've got a burning question about the next Championship Manager please feel free to ask it here and we'll do our best to get it answered (even if it's not in the podcast :) )

1) Will the Home-Leagues be included in the CM09 Version?
2) The New Game Engine looks amazing, can you see this being an area for further development?
3) How confidient are you that CM09 will meet the needs of everyone who buys a copy?
4) Working for EA Sports, have you played Fifa 09, and what do you think of it?
5) Finally, will there be a list of new features in CM09 released to the community only?

The question of Home-Leagues being included in the CM09 Version is a very important one as most CM users are very keen on the idea.
Are you looking at making the team talk option alittle bit more updated as the 3 options you get for the team talk are not always correct to use for the way a match is going.
The appeal option for red and yellow cards is no longer on the game. Is their a chance that it may come back for future CM games?
When arranging Pre-season friendlys it never allows you to go to places like Austria and a few others, Why is this?

Will you please, please, please put online on future versions of the game, it would make it so much more in depth and fun.
Loads of my mates used to have the game but got bored of it (dont know why) and now play rubbish free online games like fantasy football.etc.
if the great CM games were combined with online play vs mates...
well, itd be pretty ace

1) How are the stats of the players in the game determined? Or rather, how reliable are the sources?
(For example Amr Zaki is bad in CM2008, but he's the top goalscorer for international competitions in terms of apperance/goal ratio and he's currently the top scorer in the EPL.)
2) What can we expect in CM2010?
(I know its a little to early but some suggestions in the forum may not be implemented in CM2009.)
3) Will CM evolve to a stage where we can be players for a few season and then retire to become managers? (Eg. Roy Keane, Alex Ferguson, Paul Ince)
4) Will FIFA or FM (or any other football game) merge with CM one day to produce that 'ultimate' football game?
5) Why aren't there any playable Asian or African (with exception to Japan) leagues? Is it due to the lack of researchers from these regions or are you guys unwilling to implement them into the game (as it would affect its size)?

Will your managerial stats increase and decrease during your career? and all the other staff?

1. What are the main differences between Champ 08 and Champ 09? Anything major?
2. Has the Ideas Forum been used/considered at any point? If not, why?
3. Are you confident that we will be happy with everything for 09?
4. Has ideas and planning for 2010 begun?
5. Are the players ratings, in your opinion, more accurate this year?
6. And finally, Are regens included?
Thanks. If any of these questions can be answered that would be great!

Why should someone who has only a budget for one football game buy CM2009 and no other?
Is the match engine more realistic? No more 180 throw-ins? More intelligent decisions and positioning by the players on free kicksand corners?
What about training? Still a boring check list with no response from the assistant manager, or real day to day training, in which you can talk to players, trying new free kick variation and every day feedback from the physios and coaches?
Is it possible to arrange training camps?
Is Pro-Zone still in the game and is it improved and can become a real tactical help for the human manager?
Is it possible to arrange friendly games during the season?
Is there more media involvent and how did the developers deal with all the redundant questions/answers that can become very boring during a long term game?
What's the most interesting improvements for people who like to play a game for more than 3 seasons?
Is there more interaction between the board and the manager? Are there jobs saver than others? In Lower Leagues clubs can't sack a manager that often and quick, because they can't afford it. Will there be a difference in managing ambitious and less ambitous clubs?

1) Is there a wider base of countries and clubs to manage?
2) Is there anything from FIFA 09 that is very similar or exactly the same as what's going to be in CM09?
3) How in depth will the training and scouting system be?
4) Is it possible for a manager to have a wider range of things to ask the board? (e.g. when transfer funds are not given and ultimatum is issued, what ultimatum is stated?)
5) Are you able to hire assistant managers for country?
Thanks Roy for answering our questions...

I see that others asked this question, but I'm really interested, and you should take this in consideration(as so many of us like to manage in other British countries), will there be the Irish and Welsh leagues on?!
And if the leagues will be on, will you bring on the Setanta Sports Cup?! I hope for a big yes!

Simply put, a patch for '08 would have meant shorter development time for '09, as obviously sections of the studio couldn't work on both at the same time!

I thought that that the reason they did not patch cm08 was so they could concentrate on cm09? April release waste of time they would have missed the boat.
Even FIFA manager hav ementioned they are closing the gap on cm09 - this will compound that.
Obviously something has gone wrong!
Any ideas peeps.

Nothing has gone wrong at all. Everything is on schedule thus far, it's just we gave ourselves longer development time, as we decided we wanted to make sure some of the new features we've implemented (to do with the media, 3d engine etc) work thoroughly and not as gimmicks that look repetitive. There are over 500 player animations for example, and it takes time to tie it all in with match engine.
I believe Roy mentioned last week in an interview with gamesindustry.biz we were on for an 18 month development cycle, and I completely understand why people want to play it now, but I think you'll see we've overhauled the game and taken a big step in the right direction with it :)

A patch for CM 08 would have delayed our plans for '09 even further tbh.
The decision was made that the work we do in this development cycle would take longer, but put us in a better position in several ways for future releases.
Including the way we code in features.
When we release screens of the 3D match engine you'll see where parts of the work has gone into :)

Not a problem, I'm here to try and help with any questions you have!
Yes there hasn't been that much news for a while, but with all the recoding, there wasn't much we could show, visually, that was presentable at that stage, if you catch my drift.
For example, we couldn't announce the 3D match engine for sure, until we were happy we could get it to work, and with the 500+ animations going in, we hope it gives it a lot of variety, and these need to be thoroughly tested. So if this looked like it wouldn't work within our code structure and we had already announced it, we'd have looked very foolish :D
But part of the restructuring has enabled us to get in the extra player animations and the way the flow etc.
We've then put in the plan to release a data update after the summer transfer window has shut, so there will be updated data going into the next season :)

Im sorry, but i got really mad when i saw the game was being released in april when ive waited all this time for some little news about new cm coming out! And all i saw was bad news.
I got pissed off, but now i understand that if cm 09 wants to compete with fm 09 they will have to change the game a lot... But the date is just too late! I wont be buying a game that is coming out at the end of the season!
I got soemthing to add, FM 09 just added 3D game and some new media features, and everything is equal except the color of the skin. They really didnt have that much to do..
And if CM 09 really wants to change radically, i understand they need more time to do so.
I remember one CM i dont remember which tho, that was released in march, i dont remember the reasons too lol..
[Sorry for the bad language on the above post] :(

My Question Is
When Signing a youngster from a different country who has no current international caps,
After so many years will he be able to be called up to the national team, in with league he's playing
Example - Buying Jean Chera at the age of 12, keeping him until he's 22 and then maybe calling him up to the english national team?.

Really sorry if these are mentioned already.
1. Will there be online play? Like maybe a mini-league, where you can play matches and sell players within that League only.
2. Will it be easier to apply for management of another club?..Because this has been bugging me over some time.

I'm not sure why people are moaning about it being released at the end of the season. I mean, Football Manager will have been pretty much played to death by folk like myself, who sadly find themselves finishing work and getting into bed about three hours before I'm up without eating anything. The football season will be almost over, no World Cup or European Championships. So what's going to fill the void that is there due to no football and no football management sims... maybe a football management sim. I know, shocking.

I posted a thread about this liast night, but didn't see this one already started, so I'll ask in here.
Will CM09 have any sort of copy protection along same sort of lines that FM09 has gone, with limited installs and having to either telephone or connect to the internet to authenticate the game, or will it have some sort of disk protection like CheckDisk?
Also noticed that the game has included the BGB, Ryman and Unibond leagues, will these include the next tier down, but which I mean Ryman Division One North etc?

Hi folks,
Have you got something you'd like to ask the developers of Championship Manager?
Roy Meredith (BGS and CM General Manager) is appearing on Gamespot's podcast this Thursday and we'd like to invite you to post your questions to him here. We can't promise they'll all be answered, but if you've got a burning question about the next Championship Manager please feel free to ask it here and we'll do our best to get it answered (even if it's not in the podcast :) )

Just wondered if the developers of CM09 have looked back at older versions to see what made them so great and addictive. Looking at CM01/02 it was near perfection at the time and there are many good features from that series that could be implemented/used in future CM's. Having downloaded and tried the FM demo I think that 3D representation is not the way forward for Management games - its all about imagination.
Maybe im old school but I would love to see a management game that would recapture the old addiction from years ago.

some managers too in RL, prefer not to go to the match and stay warm at thier home sofa listing to the radio and calling the assistant for any changes .
realsime wise, this is impossible,
it is like saying ok, let me love and marry a women, with my eyes closed, leaving space to my imagination. sure nothing can beat her beauty in my imagiantion.
some like to live liek that
some want like real managers spot where the problem are, and try to fix it, and 3d view profide best view to the game.
the text mode still gonna be developped anyway, beside the 3d, so i tihnk everyone is gonna stay happy.
and BGS should developp the game to all area to all costumers types.

So why not just delay it until September and call it 09/10?

Will there be the ability to add user-created leagues? One of the great weaknesses of that other soccer game is the developers' total lack of interest in adding a couple more African leagues, even though the research has been done. I say, give the user community the ability to add a league.
Customization options would help distinguish your game from the competition.

If I were 1 of those ppl who voted on somthing you had done then read what you have just posted on here then i'd feel alittle bit stupid right about now knowing that YOUR going to fight this for it to come out on ps3! What I want is for Championship manager to come out b4 xmas but will I get it?? NO! If I rant like you just did will BGS listen? NO! they are trying to make a game thats top stuff with very little time to do it and if it was an online poll then why would you want it for ps3? you must have access to a pc so just buy it for that. So fight on son but try walking b4 u start running as ppl will only listen if u talk and not babble aload or crap

19th November 2008, 2:19 AM
88% is a meaningless number. How many people did you ask? What are the demographics? Are they regular players? Is it likely they'll convince other people to purchase the game?
There are a ton of other questions relating to the potential profitability of a PS3 release of the game. I'm by no means trying to stop you from making your voice heard, but if you asked 11 people and 8 said they want it, that's not a very big sample size, and can hardly be used to represent any type of meaningful population. While the other questions are slightly less important to an extent, they do factor into the potential for profit. These are all things you have to consider.
I'm sure there's a good reason CM09 isn't intended for consoles - the costs outweigh the forecasted returns at this point.

well basic graphics i think could include:

at least we can start preparing them,

Hi Golaxi,
We've re-worked the regen system quite a bit as well as the ageing. We don't necessarily use old players but we do, when creating players, take a DNA like print of a player who has retired to base new players on. This means that it should keep the levels of good and bad players the same throughout time and keep the stronger nations strong. Although that doesn't mean you can't get some new emerging nations in the future.
Scouting has been completely re-written, I'll do a write up soon about that for the web site, all I can say is that I'm sure you'll be impressed :)
hope that helps

Thats sounds amazing if this can work with no bugs, and the younger players retiring at 14-18 has that been fixed also? so there isn't as many young players retiring.
Also did you fix players randomly joining your club even though you dont want them, but they still belong to another club.
Thanks

1) In CM09, instead of having nothing but friendly matches in the pre-season, will it be possible to send your players on a training tour?
For example, some teams are sent to train at high altitude as it's better for re-gaining fitness. Other teams are sent to train with better teams, like Swansea City trained with Barcelona for a week or so before this season started.
2) Will it be possible to form relationships with other managers/staff?
For example, when managing lower league clubs, if you could form a good relationship with another manager from the Premiership then it would be a good way to get potentially great players on loan, and vice-versa if you're managing the Premiership club. The relationship status could be based on how well the loan signings develop...
Could also form a good relationship with backroom staff so that when you move club then they'd be keen to follow you?
3) Will it be possible to negotiate new managerial contracts?
Instead of the contract automatically being renewed, it would be good to negotiate a salary with the club. Would also be good to be able to approach the board at times to request an improved salary and be able to issue an ultimatum on the threat of leaving the club! Signing on bonuses would also be good.
4) As in previous versions of the game, will it be possible to complain about refereeing performances and appeal red cards?
5) Will it be possible to establish a media persona as a manager?
Anything from a Jose Mourinho who loves the media attention, to Sven who's always in it for the wrong reasons, to a Harry Redknapp style manager who stays mainly under the radar.
6) Would be good to have players come to you for advice with regards to transfers and other things.
For example if a player was to leave the club, not necessarily on bad terms, if they had several offers they could come to you for advice on what you thought would be the best move for their career.
Sorry for the long post, hope not too much of it is repeated fro earlier posts.

I have an important question.
Will you be able to expand the stadium and if you have enough money, build a new stadium?
also how will youth development work? what age will youngsters come through? You could gain advantage over the other game by having them bare young. and also how will training work?
in another very popular game i think the training has always sucked. I think you could gain some advantage by making a really good training system so you can actually develop your players properly.
could you suggest to your players to stay behind after training at possibly the risk of upsetting them? or maybe some players will do it of their own accord and the coaching staff will let you know?
for my gaming experience aswell as it being an enjoyable, realistic game i also want a game with longevity. and to be able to do things real managers would be able to do.
and btw, why does the community link button on the site now go to the tomb raider website? how are people gonna find the forums?

I would admit that ChampMan had 3D already in version 2007 and 2008. Now it is only a remake with motion capture.

It is sad that developers do not listen to majority of people,cm3 series made this game so addictive and popular, and they destroy this game with every new edition,so many good things can be taken from cm3 series,i'm affraid that cm and fm will become like fifa manager, fifa has only good graphics, everything else is horror, and your idea is not bad,but i think they won't listen to us,they will continue in they way making the game not playable!

If they continue in this bad way,i will not turn my computer ever on,because there is no game for me to play, but i hope they will listen to us someday,i play 01/02 sometimes with these updates but it's boring when you can win everything with every club in first season, and this pitches destroy my wish to play this new releases,as you said it's not the way forward!

I will buy all of the managerial books, every edition to learn how to play cm2009,fm 2009,i want to know how to organise trainings,tactics...,or better why don't you write a book how to play these two games, the time has come that you will have to have a managerial manual to learn how to play them, why can't you do something good and give people an option to choose what they want to watch, some of us don't like to watch these pitches

Surely if someone told you in a book, right buy ...... then use the tactic....... etc. the game would be boring, finding new players and creating your own tactics is the main things for the game tbh.

Simple? Really? Because all the crazy buttons are all over the shop and it took me a while to figure out what each button was, frustrating me to no end.
Anyway why would you want books? The whole point of this is to experiment it out yourself, not get a straightforward guide to everything. If you want that then it just takes all the fun out of everything.

No i haven't seen the latest screenshots,i am not nervous because you decided to release it almost at the end of football season,it means you have more time to improve it,it is worth of waiting, but if i wait six months only for improvement of graphics that's not good, what i am trying to say is that if the match engine 3d and better graphics was the only reason of delaying then i i'm scared, and we already have a game released called fifa manager,by the way i haven't met anyone who plays this game, and plenty of people who played or still play versions of cm or fm from older to newer,it's not all about the graphics, pes had not so good graphics in recent years and wasn't licensed, but is still ten times better than fifa, the main aspect of the game is playability, and if you could look at my thread called 'more start options' and many sites in this world who are updating one game for many many years, game with poor poor graphics when you compare with today's cm games, game that has excellent level of playability, highly popular even today, and when you see all of that, then you'll know what i am talking about, maybe i can't find a lot of people here who will agree with me,but certainly this option would give us a right to choose!
Btw HAPPY NEW YEAR!

You didn't understand what i am trying to say,i am saying that the game is trying to copy everything from real life, but it is impossible to do that, the game is getting too complicated with every statistic and mode available in the new games,it's good they try to make the game real, but some things can't be implemented from real life, and it's making the game bad!

Cheers Ant: If people can not be bothred to read it here are some key points:
1) returning to the series is the ability to set two formations - standard and defensive - for one game
2) Recently confirmed licenses include the Spanish league, the Football League, the Ryman League and the Home Leagues (Welsh, Irish and Northern Irish) more to follow.
3) while an absolute ton of new pictures and journalist penned news stories have been created to spice up your in-game email inbox.
4) The game will also introduce a host of new weather, crowd and sound effects, and it's the attention to detail
There is some new screens aswell.

You can do this in CM08.
Just go into the highlights filter when in game and turn them all off, that way you'll only have the text at the bottom of the screen.
I play it with only the goals turned on and I find it makes the game go quite quickly. Only slight downside to that is when you play it that way, every time the 3d pitch comes up you know someone is gonna score!

Hi all,
It's been a while but as promised, Cappo and I thought it about time to get on here and provide some responses to your questions
Forgive the delay in replying but we're in the middle of Alpha, which means loads of very long days focused on the game and finalising the software
So we've grabbed a load of the questions that haven't been answered in any of the press yet and replies are below. Feel free to keep the questions coming (although bear in mind that we can't answer all of them just yet)
Seeing as you can play as teams in the Isthman league how far down does the English league ladder go now?
Hi Morrison iz Da Best (prefer the 'maiden' name!) we're going to the 7th tier - fully playable Rymans Premier together with Northern Premier and Southern Premier
Will the patch include changes like changing the game to say 2010 instead of 2009?
We're looking at how we deliver the patch data right now - we will be doing patches, to include updated transfer info, but I believe you're asking whether the patch will enable you to start the game during the following season. If this is what you're asking we're hopeful about it and it's certainly our aim, but we can't confirm 100% just yet
One question. Is this development cycle going to be permanent? Meaning will CM 2010 and following versions be released in the christmas period? Or is CM going to be released around the March, April period every year from now onwards.
Certainly CM10 won't be any earlier than that (I don't want to face a 6 month dev cycle and I think half the team would have kittens if I suggested it).

Will the game also available in different languages, for example french or dutch?
Current languages at the moment - 6 inlcuding English, French, Spanish, Italian (other two to be confirmed shortly). We won't be doing a Dutch version at the moment, though
Will there be a Mac OS X release of CM 2009 ?
Yes - just not sure of release date yet
Since it's going to be released in the middle of 08/09, will the game itself pick up from there (the middle of the season)?
Game start will be the beginning of 08/09 season allowing managers to re-write the season before it ends in real life....
will the rotherham board be lenient and recognise the -17 points deduction
Yes they will, BUT remaining in the job will depend on a number of factors (finances, popularity, style of play etc) as they would with any club
If a question list is still being compiled I have one too.
In CM09 will we be able to select all competitions and Simulate world? I recently found out that I don't have certain players if I have Simultate world off, but that's the only choice I get when I select all competitions
Answer from Tom Hooper (game designer & all round decent bloke) - all the competitions are simulated, regardless of what leagues you're running. The depth of your player database is depenedent which leagues you run when you set up your new game. There is now no option to turn off 'simulated' world, the whole world is simulated all the time allowing you access to all countries and info

2. Will you be able to add a picture of yourself or a real manager to the manager profile that you create? (for example like in FM2009 and the old LMA Manager games)
3. Will you be able to have good graphics and 3D match engine on a 'Gaming Laptop' as I have one and it has 2.0ghz processor, 4gb RAM and a NVidia graphics card (can't remember exactly what type it is, as I can't access my laptop at the moment)

Will we ever see more awards for European/World player of the year in different positions like in older cm's. Also a team of the season/week in each position. Another feature i like from older games was the way teams had 3 star players, was just a nice little touch imo. Also will there be less likeliness of fluke results, ie my team having 30 chances and scoring 1 and the oppo having 1 chance and scoring 1 :( I know anything can happen in football but it happens too often in the game imo.

I have a question, although it's possibly not that important.
Will the new game have a more realistic Tottenham Hotspur side? Or one similar to the obviously super-charged outfit currently in the game CM08.
I say this becuase I am currently in charge of Kidderminster Harriers in the season 2013-14. It is September and I'm in my first year in the Premier League. Im 18th with 3 points from 7 games.
Spurs currently sit top with a pld 7 won 7, goals for 26 goals against 1 record. This is following their already impressive record of Prem Champs in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2013 with two runner up spots. Plus they have won the Champions League in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
Furthermore in 2009 they added the FA Cup to make a treble. They were also runners-up in the League Cup.
Of course, they also added the corresponding Super Cup and World Club Cup to their impressive haul.
I know this is only a "flippant" question, and one that maybe should have been posted elsewhere. But has anyone else noticed the domination of Spurs while they play as other teams?
My money is on the lead developer being a Spurs fan.

Like the idea of having the 3 star players back. Think managers should be able to pick their own though, and not just have to accept the ones selected by the game.

A couple of questions for Mr Meredith or any of the devs
Is the game balance such that there are no real (big) diferences between text mode and 3D mode?what I have seen from other games so far are either player characteristics that work (apear) perfectly on 3D but are useless in text or the oposite.Have you managed to make a player react same way both in 3D and text?
Is the match pre calculated (and being such pre decided) in 3D (does the game cheat the gamer in other words?) if such do I still have the oportunity to drive code crazy by multiple changing on tactics and players during the match changing the initial calculation of match engine?
Are there unique player characteristics?if yes will they be visible while playing 3D?will height and weight for the first time in 3D gaming will play the big role that play in real football world?will 3D be hardcoded or easy to access by modders?
thank you in advance

1. Do you anticipate the game to be able to run at a respectable speed on a HP laptop using an AMD Sempron processor. Athlons and Semprons struggle with Football Manager 2009, so will this also be the case with champ 09?
2. In my opinion the user interface, pitch overview interface, and the tactics/team talk interface is near-perfect in Champ 08 - Are they changing drastically for the new version? Will there be an option to view the match highlights in the same way as in '08?
3. With regards to research, do you use World Soccer magazine when deciding player stats. I only ask this as Football Manager 2009 has got it wrong for so many players. A few talented players you might consider: Ezequiel Garay(Santander), Maxi Moralez(Racing), Gerardo Bruna(Liverpool), lulinha(Corinthians), Juan Mata(Valencia).
Thanks!!!!!
